Coloured Sands Pink Clay: Behind the Scenes

by Christina Cannes

Pink clay is the perfect ingredient for clear, clean skin and tight pores. Skip the harsh exfoiliators and opt for this gentle mask cleanser instead.

After years of clear skin – and years of acne – and now staring down the barrel at ageing, my goal was to develop a product that delivers a gentle cleanse without harming the skin or the earth.

I have struggled with acne during my twenties and it wasn’t until I sold all my possessions, bought a ticket to Australia and started a five-year trek through the Outback that my skin finally cleared up. I attribute my skin’s healing to not only finally following my passion, but also learning to be gentle with – and love – my body.

Acne is a hormonal imbalance caused by too many androgens (male hormones). For women, this is usually caused by diet and stress. But what many people don’t tell you, is that by treating acne using harsh cleansers and exfoliants that strip your skin, you’re actually doing more damage. Your skin needs a protective layer to keep it healthy and by using soaps that remove oil, they also remove the protection exposing your skin to dirt, pollutants, bacteria – all the irritants that cause acne! This goes for anti-aging formulations as well. Too many exfoliants can leave your skin raw, exposed and susceptible to even more damage.

The Healing Power of Clay

During my travels in the Outback, I used to clean our dishes using mud and dirt if we were somewhere remote and the earth was pristine. The same went for my face and body – there is nothing more grounding than rubbing mud all over you and going for a swim in a clear, cool stream. Not to mention the fact that immersing yourself in nature every day brings those stress levels to zero (which also helps clear up acne).

I created Coloured Sands Pink Clay as not just a mask, but as a gentle cleanser for problem skin and ageing skin. With added zeolite (awesome for deep cleansing and delivering micronutrients to the skin) and Kakadu Plum powder (the highest concentration of vitamin C in the world), you get skin-loving ingredients that are good for you and good for the earth. Flushing this down the sink won’t contaminate the water supply (no detergents here). And it’s meant to make you feel deeply connected to the healing energy of nature. Just image yourself in a desert oasis as you smooth on this pretty pink paste, covering your body in beautiful mud and after a slow sun bake, sliding into a cold, crystal clear lake. All you need is a few drops of water to activate the formulation and then smooth over your skin and rinse.

Coloured Sands Pink Clay

Inspired by the coloured sand cliffs of Queensland’s Cooloola Coast, this all-natural, pink clay mask or scrub is enriched with Australian pink kaolin clay, zeolite and Kakadu plum powder.

Clay has been used for centuries to draw out dirt and oil from the skin. As it dries on the face, its absorbent qualities purify pores removing excess oil, pollution and make-up. With added zeolite and Kakadu plum powder, your skin receives the additional benefits of gentle exfoliation and vitamin C.

Benefits include:
– gentle exfoliation and skin renewal
– purification and deep cleansing
– acne management
– supports collagen production

Pink clay is a combination of red and white clay containing a high level of essential minerals such as silica and iron which work to replenish and regenerate the epidermis of the skin. Use pink clay to refine, stimulate skin cell regeneration, promote skin suppleness and hydration, reduce skin redness, sensitivity and irritation, heal and enhance skin cell regeneration.

Zeolite is a natural volcanic mineral which has a high negative charge and micro-porous structure which makes it incredibly powerful in binding to and removing toxins. It works to draw and remove impurities from our skin which is constantly being exposed to environmental pollutants. Zeolite is the ideal anecdote for unclogging pores, clearing blackheads, healing acne breakouts, detoxifying, cleansing and purifying the skin and balancing oil production.

Kakadu plums grow wild in the subtropical areas of the Northern Territory, Western Australia and West Queensland. Kakadu Plum contains 3,000mg of vitamin C per 100g (50% higher than oranges). Vitamin C is used to produce collagen, which reduces wrinkles and lines, reduces scarring, and lightens hyperpigmentation. It can even prevent skin changes caused by photo-ageing.
