Venus stations retrograde on October 5th at 10° of Scorpio until November 16th, when it will station direct at 25° of Libra.
Every 18 months, Venus—the planet of love, harmony and compassion—goes retrograde.
Whenever the lovely Venus goes retro, politeness can too. Being kind and compassionate might require more effort as like most retrogrades, we are being asked to reflect on our own self—and discover what needs healing. Here’s the best advice for the next 40 days and 40 nights and just remember if an ex comes knocking, that’s probably not a good thing. It is however, an ideal time to get your creative juices flowing.
“The myth associated with Venus’s backward motion is of the Sumerian goddess Inanna’s great descent into the underworld. Called one day by her sister, Ereshkigal, goddess of the underworld, Inanna descends to meet her removing her magical possessions one-by-one until she is striped bare. Ereshkigal is the opposite to Inanna’s beauty, glory, and adoration—she is the sister betrayed, unloved, alone and rejected. Ereshkigal is the disowned, the shadow aspect of Inanna, waiting to be discovered.
When Inanna reaches her sister in the underworld completely at her mercy, she is hung on meat hooks and left to rot where no one can reach her. The only beings that come to her aid are two magical helpers who appease Ereshkigal by witnessing her pain, acknowledging it and mirroring her struggle back to her. Given compassion for her struggle, she gifts these creatures Inanna’s body and the goddess is reborn. Ascending to the Great Above, Inanna is renewed, but is never the same. Now fully awakened by coming into contact with the pain of her other half, Inanna is, for the first time, a Queen truly worthy of her crown.
Ereshkigal is the deep reservoirs of power that lay within the unconscious. We cannot come into contact with our full potential until we are willing to descend into our underworlds, reckoning with the truth of what has happened to us. The struggle of marrying the unconscious and the conscious, the Queen of the Great Above, and the Queen of the Great Below, is a process of transformation so intense and painful we can only do it in the underworld. We need deep caverns, incubators, and safe places to grieve and reunite with ourselves.
The collective rage that is being unleashed in this moment is incredible. Undeniable. Irreversible. Ancient. This has been a year of opening ourselves to the howls of Ereshkigal. We are all being asked to meet her, acknowledge her pain, and invite in the lessons and wisdom of this myth. We are not above the forces that threaten to pull us under, but we are undoubtedly made more whole when we can hold space for our broken and still beautiful selves.”
Examine Your Relationships
“This year, Venus will spend the first part of its retrograde (from October 5 to 31) in intense, erotic Scorpio, dredging up power struggles, forcing us to look at intimate ties and dangling tempting-yet-toxic “sex with an ex” scenarios in front of some of us. Then from October 31 to November 16, Venus will back into her home sign of dreamy-eyed Libra, the ruler of committed relationships, mutuality and marriage. Don’t rush to the engagement ring shop or the altar just yet! And be equally cautious about barreling into a breakup.
Venus retrograde demands that you take people off a pedestal and see them through the lens of reality, rather than with rose-colored filters. That can be jarring at first. But is your chief complaint a deal breaker—or is there something to learn here by addressing those issues together? A wise therapist we know once said, “It’s not that successful couples don’t have conflict, because they do. It’s how they work through it that determines the strength of their relationship.”
The Two Phases In Depth
“During the first phase of the retrograde (Oct 6 to 26), Venus is below the horizon technically and descending, she is still the evening star. Weakening but still loving, reflective and receptive. Venus here is quite pure and virginal too and possibly a little insecure. During this time we might feel like we need more love, but are extra shy about going out and finding a new lover. Instead, we might cling to a past relationship, which is why this period can bring the return of old flames and karmic connections. It might make you mournful of a love lost and very defensive if anyone new tries to step on the ghost of your beloved ex. During this time it might be good to bring closure to any long-dead relationship with a reflective post-mortem. After that, when Venus becomes invisible, give that bad romance a good funeral!
For the last two weeks of the Venus retrograde period (Nov 3 to 16), Venus is the morning star. This is the time when you are most likely to get involved in a ‘Dark Cupid’ or narcissistic affair. You will most definitely be thinking with your reproductive organs and not your brain, so do try to resist the sex if you can. You may get a series of red flags but still ignore them. A one night stand might during this time might seem harmless and disposable, but on a spiritual level, this goes far deeper. Your body is your temple so don’t give into the Luciferian psychic vampires. You might find yourself drained for many months afterwards. It’s simply not worth it.
Aphrodite’s bad points are often overlooked. She had a reputation for jealousy, revenge, possessiveness, and infidelity. The stress and misery caused by this behavior can attract unwanted hyper-dimensional entities which feed of the drama. Sometimes we think we need a sexual fling because it has been a while, we just want to have fun and we feel we can take it or leave it. But with Venus retrograde, we might develop an obsessive attachment to the so-called “friend with benefits”, which we hadn’t bargained for. We could find we are kept in a very unpleasant psychic, sexual bondage.
So I would say proceed with caution with any new relationships. However Venus Retrograde doesn’t have to play out like ‘50 Shades’ of cringe, for like Mercury retrograde, Venus turned inward has its uses. Lyn Koiner says it “is an excellent time for buying antiques, flea market items and secondhand goods wherein you know the real worth and value of the item but the seller does not.” It’s also good for selling your own unwanted items. I believe the first two-thirds of Venus Retrograde (Oct 6 to Nov 3) could be an ideal time for creativity that explores your inner world. Make music, art or poetry just for yourself and not for the public.”
How to Work the Retro
“There are many styles of doing Venus Retrograde. You can go the full Pluto, journey into the dark zones of your personal shadowlands, reclaim psychic strengths, rescue lost dimensions of yourself and emerge fierce A.F. Preferably with an invisible palladium crown and a raven flying overhead as familiar.
Or you can spritz on something that smells chic but ruthless – a perfume equivalent of brutalism – and go to work with a calculator (optional: scratch a rune into the back of it) and spreadsheets. Using various inputs, you will come up with an equation of time, money, lust, loyalty, orgasms, muse value, contemporary currency and utility to assess the worthwhile relationships.
You could relive and release scary aspects of your past or just make a bolt from crap-energy infused dynamics now. Uranus in Taurus is strengthening gut instincts. My theory: the more you balance your gut (less sugar, probiotics, whatever your naturopath says) the better and more potent your gut instincts.
A Retro-Venusian strip-back to basics of all skincare regimes, scents, hair, lingerie, cosmetics, grooming patterns & habits. Alternatively, you might like to consider recommitting to your self and solitude, to re-appreciating freedom. Finally, there is always the option of falling legit-hard for a person you feel for sure you knew once upon another time.ALL or ANY of these can work with Venus Retro and it is about to become more influential from now.”
