Where do you go when you need to escape? For me, its Poona Lake, a pristine freshwater lake hidden deep inside the tropical rainforest near Rainbow Beach, Qld. Surrounded by paperbark trees, the brown water is naturally infused with healing tannins and tea tree essential oil which not only refreshes you on a hot day, but heals the skin.
A healer once told me that I needed to visit a tea tree lake. “Bath yourself in the waters of the feminine. Tea tree lakes,” she explained, “were sacred.” Since tea tree oil is antiseptic, the waters clean and heal any abrasions or burns and were traditionally used by Aboriginal people for birthing. This instruction came after a powerful session with her that completely changed my life – and affirmed that the world we live in is in fact magical. Determined to find a lake nearby, I googled my way to the middle of the rainforest in Rainbow Beach. I set out in my FJ Cruiser and to my delight, I discovered paradise.
While Poona Lake and other tea tree lakes are freshwater, this salt soak is meant to invoke the same feeling of utter beauty and relaxation. Nestled deep in the rainforest, the only sounds that make it through the thick canopy of trees are birdsong and the wind across the water. It is the place I go to when times are tough and the place I always return to during my meditations and in the bath when I can’t get away. The white sand, the brown water and the blue sky is my own personal nirvana. I hope it can be yours too.

Australian sea salt is harvested from some of the world’s cleanest waters. The Southern Ocean, between the southern edge of Australia and the icy coast of Antarctica, flows cool and clear and produces some of the coldest, saltiest water in the world. Sea salt is rich in minerals including sodium chloride, bicarbonate, magnesium, and calcium, which have many health benefits. A sea salt bath can improve blood circulation and decrease inflammation as well as aid in detoxification.
Epsom salt is packed full of beneficial magnesium which can ease stress and relax the body, relieve pain and muscle cramps. The sulphates in Epson salts may have a detoxifying effect on the body.
Organic tea tree essential oil or Melaleuca alternifolia is a native Australian tree found in lowlands and wetlands and has been used by Aboriginal people to treat colds, flus, sores and infections. Producing a sharp, fresh aroma it is antimicrobial, antifungal and great for healing the skin and respiratory congestion.
Organic lemon myrtle essential oil or Backhousia citriodora is rare in the Australian wild. Small volumes were discovered in 1888 in Queensland and have been used as flavourings, teas and essential oils since. With its rich, uplifting, zesty fresh, lemon scent it is an energising oil that is also antifungal and antimicrobial.
Australian Kakadu plum seed oil is a uniquely Australian derived oil from the Kakadu plum fruit. Grown wild in the subtropical areas of the Northern Territory, Western Australia and West Queensland, Kakadu Plum contains 3,000mg of vitamin C per 100g (50% higher than oranges). Vitamin C is used to produce collagen, which reduces wrinkles and lines, reduces scarring, and lightens hyperpigmentation. It can even prevent skin changes caused by photo-ageing. The presence of the phytochemicals helps clear up acne breakouts and balance the complexion. It is naturally brightening and can reduce swelling and help resolve redness. As a natural anti-inflammatory and antibiotic it can be used on the most sensitive of skin types.
